slime on, you crazy diamonds

why are gay men called gay while the women are called lesbians? is that we see and expect to see witty, funny, smiley, gay, gaymen? while your average lesbian is always portrayed as a grim prison warden type?

i allus expect hippys to be happy. hippos too. and hoopoes.

the first in a series of random comments is below. no context or editorial comment, just verbatim what i genuinely hear on the street or sometimes think of myself and wouldnt it have been brilliant if someone had actually said it.

"an investor is like a hungry baby"

so..this is actually an ironic thing, gay was actually used sometimes to mean licentious, promiscuos etc. for both men and women regardless of sexual orientation - gay brothels etc.. whereas the word lesbian seems to have come from the social practices of women in the Greek island of Lesbos, where they congregated together to read poetry...so quite different from the prison warden image. and now more people claim the gay word than the lesbian word.
But I do agree with you that a happy investor is like a hungry hippo. And hippies and hoopoes must hope for the best.

so has the usage of gay changed? cos it dosen't seem to have any licentious type undertones anymore.
i suspect though that the happy happy joy joy meaning of gay is going to leach out of our vocabulary over time, leaving us with the word as related to homosexual ppl only, with a vaguely happy undertone.

and now i have stumbled on a great way to write lazily. i shall pontificate on things i dont know enough about. and an army of eager phd students will give me the source and historically accurate facts.
thanks art.

Behold the hippopotamus!
We laugh at how he looks to us,
And yet in moments dark and grim
I wonder how we look to him.

vot about the dolphins...?
you forgot to mention dolphins and koala beers. so what that they don't have a 'pp' in their names.
besides not just eager PhD students, even hungry postdocs might be waiting on the blocks to add to our feeling of general enlightenment

ogden nash's poetry is the thing i shall comment on - two of my favourites are

candy is dandy,
but liquor is quicker and

The cow is of the bovine ilk
one end is moo, the other milk

lets see where this ends up.

Anatomically speaking exactly how?
Can milk come out from an end of a cow.

the eager (and the hungry) would like to know..

reminds me of something from Humour In Uniform from RD ages ago - General gets into elevator and barks at private: Take me to the 11th floor.
Private: But sir, this building has only 10 floors.
General: Try your best, sunny!

Moral: Arty, the cow needs to try its best ;)
